CORN
Etymology

The maize (corn) comes from the arawak word, who evolved in maysi and mahiz by the Caribbean, native Indians of the Antilles.
Larousse mentions that the term results from a Haitian word. Let us note that the island of Haiti was populated with Indians Arawaks during colonial time in 1492; it is thus true that the word has been implanted in the Haitian culture for several centuries but it existed well before in South America where Arawaks was native.
